Bits of beauty on Instagram...

I am now on Instagram, under the name of thepinkhome. I’m not really sure why it took me so long to join. I originally opened an account a couple of years ago and then promptly all but forgot about it. I have been thinking of resurrecting it and finally did so this month. If you enjoy little snapshots of beauty ~ and I am guessing you do if you’re reading this blog ~ please follow me and I’ll be happy to return the favor. Click here to view my Instagram profile, or just look me up at thepinkhome on your smartphone.
Wishing all of you a lovely weekend...

My home: The before & after tour...

I have made a few changes here to my blog, mostly to brighten things up and allow some room for a few new features. Since I finally finished compiling all of my posts as part of my whole-house redecorating project, I wanted to feature those ~ I know how people love before & after projects, including me.
So, for those who may not be familiar, a little background: In mid-2012, we moved back into our old house in the Carolinas after living in southern California for six years. For a good year and a half, I kept busy completely redecorating the entire house ~ living room, dining room, hall/library, two bedrooms, TV room, kitchen, breakfast nook, bathroom and sun porch. And when I say redecorating, I mean new paint, furniture, rugs, lamps, art, the works. I even designed the fabrics for the drapes. It was exhausting. And exhilarating.
Of course, there will always be things I keep playing with and changing, but I can safely say the project is finally complete (at least until we completely renovate the kitchen and bathroom).
For those who are interested in seeing how I transformed our home, click on the photos of each room in the left-hand column, or, to see everything, you can click here to go to the main project page.
Here are some before & after pics to whet your appetite...

And there is much, much more on the main page. To see everything, including the along-the-way shots, just click on The Big Redecorating Project tab at the top of my blog. The page is divided by room so you can scroll through easily. Or, if you just want to see more of one particular room, click on the appropriate photo on the left. Either way, I hope you enjoy.

Blooms from Biltmore...

My dear friend Jenny visited one of our favorite places this past weekend ~ Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C. She wandered the rose gardens and took these beautiful photographs, which she was kind of enough to let me share with you. I just love all the glorious colors she captured. I will have to go visit with my camera soon.
Wishing all of you a week filled with beauty...

A perfect match...

Don’t you love it when you find a new use for an old treasure? One of my dearest friends found this vintage pink trash can (and matching tissue box cover) at a flea market several years ago and brought it home to me. “A little bit of pink kitsch,” she said. “I thought you would like it.” She was right, of course.
For a long time, I used the trash can as it was intended, in the bathroom or in my giant closet/dressing room, when I had such a thing. But when we moved back East, it didn’t seem to find a home in my new decorating scheme, so I put it away, hoping I would find a use for it.

And then a couple of months ago, I saw the photograph above. I can’t for the life of me remember where I found it, but when I saw it, I instantly knew I had a use for my old pink trash can. Because I design wallpaper and fabric for fun, I have a lot of wallpaper samples. I mean, a lot. Some of you may remember me writing about nearly drowning in them last summer. I typically keep them in three rolls, tied and sitting on a corner of my desk, both for decoration and inspiration. When I saw the photo above, I knew I had found a new way to store them.

Isn’t that adorable? I think they just go perfectly together.

What I'm planting today...

After talking and planning for the past two years, our yard renovation has begun in earnest. Yesterday we pulled up our ancient, very scraggly azaleas (what a job that was) so we could create a new flower bed. Here is some of what we are going to be planting today. Since we removed the sick 100-year-old oak tree from our front yard, we have quite a bit more sunshine, which means we can plant some things that like a bit more sun. Honestly, I think if the azaleas had gotten just a tad more sun over the years, they wouldn’t have been in such bad shape. So for the new bed, there will be some new azaleas, roses, a gardenia, some foxglove, and few other pretty perennials.
We also started work on the flower bed on the other side of the front yard yesterday. That one is in much better shape but it still needs some help. I’ve got some goodies for that one, too, including a lovely pink rhododendron and a few annuals (like those lovely yellow and purple African daisies you can see in the photo below). I always like to leave room for a few annuals because some years I may be in the mood for yellow, others I may want to add a bit red, or pink, etc. ~ it allows you to brighten things up in whatever color you are loving that year.
There is lots to do in our yard and it will take awhile to realize all of our plans. We have already replanted the grass in the front and back yards and are planning new fencing, new brick walkways and more flower beds. I also want to find a spot for a vegetable garden and plant a screen in the back yard. By the time it’s all finished, both the front and back yards will look smashing. But boy is there a lot of work ahead.

Since I’m showing you pictures of flowers, I thought you might enjoy seeing the tulips we planted last fall. I took these photos a couple of weeks ago; the tulips have just finished for the year. But they were lovely. (And that brick pathway you see is getting redone.)

What are you up to today?

Sunlit orchid...

I love how the light streams through our living room windows, particularly later in the day. It’s lovely to sit in this room and watch the sunlight soften as the day comes to an end. My orchid seems to particularly enjoy its new home.
I am looking forward to a weekend of gardening and a few other projects around the house. What are you up to?
