Looking forward to a new year...

Hello, everyone. I hope all of you are enjoying a wonderful holiday season so far. We had a lovely Christmas and now I'm busy preparing for the New Year's Eve party we're hosting tomorrow night. Emily, of course, always has to know what's going on, so she's been surveying the activity from the sofa today. She almost blends in, doesn't she?
Wishing everyone a lovely and safe New Year's holiday. Here's to a beautiful 2013...

Merry Christmas...

Merry Christmas, friends. I'm busy putting together our table for Christmas dinner tomorrow (is there anything more fun than playing with all of your dishes and pretty linens?) and baking. I hope all of you are enjoying the holiday as much as I am. It's wonderful to be able to host friends and family in my own home again, especially when it's all decorated for Christmas.
Happy holidays to all...

Cheerful and colorful stockings...

I know there is holiday beauty and inspiration everywhere right now, but I saw these adorable stockings made from Liberty London fabrics and had to share. They're so cute and cheerful, they just make me smile. I absolutely adore some of the Liberty London fabrics; they create such beautiful patterns.
If you're interested in more on how they made the stockings, you can read about it on their blog here.

Deck the halls with festive color...

I just love decorating for Christmas. While I used pink and white decorations in my living room, I wanted deep, bright colors in the dining room. The red really stands out again the walls, giving the room a very festive feeling, which I love.
I'm going to be busy this weekend finishing my holiday shopping; it'll be lovely to come home to a completely decorated house.

The beauty of poinsettias...

Did you know that today is Poinsettia Day here in the United States? Pink, white, red ~ I love this gorgeous winter bloom. This year I have red ones in the dining room and pink and white ones in the living room. They're such a natural, easy way of adding a little beauty to the holidays.

A pink Christmas glow...

My pink and white living room is accented with metallics, so it seemed appropriate to keep my Christmas decorations to the same color scheme. I found this adorable little champagne colored tree at Hobby Lobby for the fireplace and added a few sparkly bits of garland to catch the light. I have a friend who gives me pink flamingo ornaments (a reminder of a previous adventure), so they went on this tree, too. A few pink and white poinsettias, some metallic garland for the mantle, a metallic wreath for the door and lots of candles, and I was done. The room has a lovely pink light on a regular day, but with the Christmas decorations, it positively glows.
Wishing all of you a lovely weekend...

Making the best of an old kitchen...

With my house redecorating project officially done for now ~ the last of the furniture arrived Tuesday, thank goodness ~ I thought I'd share with you the last few rooms you haven't seen. My kitchen is one of the two rooms in the house where I'm sort of limited in what I can do. While the rest of the house got a major makeover this summer and fall, the only big thing I did in the kitchen was paint the cabinets. We plan on gutting and redoing the kitchen in the next year or two, so it didn't seem worthwhile to spend a whole lot of time and effort in there. The room is woefully behind the times, as you can see. Even so, it has a certain charm about it, I think.
I love red and yellow in the kitchen. My friend who rented my house while I was in California painted the kitchen green. I contemplated painting it yellow again, but the green went so well with my dishes and the oatmeal cabinets, I decided to leave it. The breakfast nook in the back still has yellow walls, so I used red to tie the two spaces together.
I had taken the doors off the dish cupboard when I lived here before; it instantly opened up the room and made the dishes a big part of the decor. Since I'm a dishaholic, it's perfect for me. After I painted the bottom cupboards this time, I made some cute curtains out of one of my Pink Home fabrics and framed and hung some pretty art on the walls. Between that and the red door table in the breakfast nook, which is the old front door to the house, the kitchen is full of old-world charm.
So while I'm looking forward to new cabinets and countertops and a farmhouse sink one day, the kitchen is cute and it works, so it's fine for now.
What do you think?

The beauty of new arrivals...

Has this ever happened to you? You think you're done with a space, but then something new comes into play causing you to rethink and rearrange. Only when you've incorporated the new arrival and stepped back do you realize that now the space is actually complete.
This happened to me twice in the last week. In the first instance, I had actually planned for the new arrival ~ a secretary ~ but I still thought the room was fine without it. I realize now I was wrong; the room needed the secretary. In the second instance, my original plan for a desk didn't work, so I had to come up with a new home for it. I found it in a room I was sure was finished before; again, the space feels better with this new arrival.
Over the Thanksgiving holiday, my parents gave me this beautiful secretary they had inherited from my grandmother. It's one of my favorite pieces of furniture from my parent's house and I'm absolutely thrilled to see it in my home. It fits perfectly in the once-empty corner of my dining room and really completes the room. It also provides the perfect space to display my ancient purple transferware, another family heirloom, thus freeing up room in my crowded china cabinet. A win-win.

My other set of parents also gave me a stunning piece from their home ~ this Asian teak desk. It originally was going into the office, but the desk didn't lend itself too well to modern-day technology. However, since it's such a fabulous piece, I had to find a home for it. I rearranged the central hall, getting rid of a bookcase and moving my fab old chest to allow space for it.

As you can see, this is a rolltop desk. But since we really don't need the workspace thanks to the secretary, there's no need to close up the desk, which allows me to display some of the books from the bookcase I had to get rid of to make space for it. The drawers in the bottom provide quite a bit of needed storage, so it is useful as well as beautiful. I also like how it feels in the hall ~ it makes the room feel even more like a useful space instead of just a pass-through.
All in all, I've been a lucky girl in the family furniture department, don't you think?

Welcome, December...

December is here. Time to decorate for the holidays and burrow indoors with lots of goodies for the winter. I'm nearly finished with my Christmas decorating and next week, the last of our furniture will arrive, which means our move and my house re-do will finally be done. I've been working on the house since May and still have a few more things to show you, which I'll do this month. I'm so looking forward to an idle winter after the madness of the move and getting resettled this summer and fall. And I'm having quite an enjoyable time decorating the house for Christmas ~ it really is a perfect house for the type of holiday decorating I like ~ pretty trees, simple elegant wreaths, lots of poinsettias and a little shimmer here and there. I'm going to finish the seasonal decorating this weekend; I haven't been that far ahead on decorating in quite awhile. Unfortunately, I'm doing nowhere near that well on my Christmas shopping. In fact, I haven't even started yet. Oh well...
