Sunday thoughts...

“Raise your words, not your voice. It is rain that grows flowers, not thunder.”
~ Rumi

I hope you all enjoy this photograph of my purple calla lily coming into bloom this spring after a rainstorm. It reminded me of this quote, so I thought I would share.

A sneak peek...

I have been busy, busy, busy this month with projects around the house. One of those projects has been redoing my porch. I’ll explain why I had to redo it later, but suffice it to say it involves a new garden project, some clearing out of old possessions and well, you know how one thing leads to another.
I will catch you up soon, but in the meantime, I thought you would enjoy a sneak peek.

The sweet smell of jasmine...

After nearly three years of pruning and reshaping, my jasmine is finally headed in the right direction. And this year it blessed me with the sweetest smelling blooms. Their perfume hangs wonderfully in the air and is the first thing to greet you as you climb out of the car.
This jasmine got a bit overgrown while we lived in California, completely consuming its trellis. Jasmine grows so quickly here you really have to keep an eye on it and prune it back or else it will take over. I have trained it to go up a lovely trellis I bought ~ the only thing it needs now is a bit of trimming at the top (I don’t want it to race up my chimney) and a bit off the front. Getting it into shape has been part of our ongoing yard renovation. Speaking of which ~ wait until you see the completed walkway in the front yard. My husband did a beautiful job. Now I just have to finish the little garden it leads to, but more on that later.
Wishing all of you a lovely week...

One last walkway...

My husband started on the last walkway project for the front yard a few weeks ago. This one will join the main path and wind around one of the front flower beds to what will become the shade garden.

Emily is convinced that all of these walkways are just for her and has been helping out.

Progress...

As you can see, he has started to turn the corner, though he still has a quite a bit of cutting to do. Still, it won’t be long until it’s done, which will make Miss Emily happy. She always uses these brick pathways to walk from one part of the yard to another.

When he’s finished, I’ll share more photos of our ongoing yard renovation.

Happy Mother's Day...

Happy Mother’s Day! To all of the moms out there, whether you are of the more traditional variety or your babies are four-legged like mine, I hope your day is filled with flowers and fun and lots of love.
In honor of this day, I’d like to share a photo with you of my grandmother, who passed away earlier this year. I was named after her, and she was a huge influence on my life in the best possible way.
This is her after she graduated and became a registered nurse. “I was a dish in my day,” she told me once, and as you can see, that was indeed true. She was truly the matriarch of our family and is missed by everyone.
Happy Mother’s Day, Gram.

Surprise strawberries...

I was poking around in a flower bed in front of my house the other day when something caught my eye. My first thought was, “That’s a strawberry.” My second thought was, “That’s impossible.” But it seems it’s not, as a closer look proved.
I have no idea how it got there, but there is indeed a little strawberry plant (at least, it looks like a strawberry to me, but perhaps it’s another type of red berry) growing in my flower bed. It has found itself a little home right along the edge, among the rock border.

Of course, there are only a couple of berries, but still ~ what a lovely surprise.

Wishing all of you a wonderful day, full of surprises...

The beauty of May roses...

The little red rose tree I planted last year has sprung to life this spring in a big way. Look at it ~ it is overflowing with gorgeous red blooms.

Aren’t they stunning? I just hope I can keep it blooming like this throughout the summer. It is a beautiful sight.

Wishing all of you a lovely day...
