Simple Pleasures... Apples in autumn

Apples are one of the best things about autumn, one of the simple pleasures I am enjoying right now. You can eat apples all year round, of course, but autumn is really when they come into their own. Country Living has a great primer here on what types of apples are best at this time of year, including descriptions of the varieties and the best uses for them in cooking. Some of the seasonal beauties include Jonamac, Gala, Cortland and Empire ~ all among my favorites. Granny Smith and Pink Lady are other favorites of mine; Red Delicious ~ not so much. (I know they're very popular but I find them to be kind of bland.)
Did you know Agatha Christie was a great lover of apples? One of her characters, Ariadne Oliver, a parody on herself, was never to be found without a pile of apples nearby. I always think that's somewhat appropriate, since I love curling up with an Agatha Christie mystery when the weather cools. There's something about a good mystery, a warm blanket, a cup of tea, and yes, an apple, that makes for a heavenly afternoon. And, of course, with Halloween just around the corner, there's always bobbing for apples and caramel apples to enjoy. Not to mention it's the perfect time of year for warm homemade applesauce (click on the Recipes tab at the top of my blog for an easy recipe.) It just wouldn't be autumn without apples.
Do you have a favorite apple?

  6. Hi Bella, just wanted to say thanks for the visit to my blog and your sweet comment.

I love apples too, I am a hard and tart kind of girl, my favorite apple just hit the farmers markets in the last couple of weeks. "Staymans" It's in the winsap family.

I used to love reading Agatha Christie. She is actually the author that got me into reading when I was in high school. Loved mysteries, and still do.

Great post and thanks for the invite.
    Hugs,
    Cindy

  14. Not a day goes by without an apple around here. Sliced, with some cheddar cheese and a cup of tea makes a great snack. Or a tablespoon of natural peanut butter for dipping. Yum! My favorite is Royal Gala. Crisp and sweet. Hope you are having a great day. Tammy

  17. For years, I thought my favorite was McIntosh because it was my mother's favorite and she always bought it. Then I discoverd that I'm not nearly as TART as a McIntosh. I'm more.... mellow. I love the Gala apple best with Golden Delicious coming in second.

Isn't it amazing how different each apple is? I think it would be fun to have an apple tasting party or something for fall.

And of course, apple CIDER is the simpliest apple pleasure of all. I might just have to blog about apple cider one day...

    Great Simple Pleasures post.

  22. Bella, I'm so glad you joined in. Isn't this such a great meme?

Your picture is so inviting. I like Fuji apples. They're usually crisp, sweet and juicy. I am not too crazy about Macintosh--too grainy.

Thank you for stopping by earlier. Much love!

  24. I LOVE apples. My favorite is Granny Smith hands-down, and I am definitely with you on the Red Delicious...bland and boring!! I have two apple trees---Gala and Jonagold. Sadly, though, again this year, we are having a zero harvest due to a miserable spring, with freezes in late April and early May. I'm hoping to find a great bargain at the store, so I can make several batches of applesauce and dried apple rings.

    Blessings to you,
    Patti
